Husband & Lovers | Beatriz Williams

No secret that I'm a sucker for historical fiction. So of course I read Beatriz Williams who has written many good ones. This one checks all the boxes--multigenerational, two seemingly separate stories that come together in the end, fame, fortune and loss. It's an engaging read, no doubt, with great story pacing. But I felt like it just wasn't her best.

Williams is at her best in the past, and much of this story is relatively recent (as in 2008, which is yesterday, right?). The story of Hannah in 1950s Egypt is more complex and interesting than that of Mallory who's high school boyfriend turns out to be a huge rock star (I'm seeing hints of Springsteen here, but that might just be me). It's a fun and easy read, but I felt like too many twists and turns at the end weren't foreshadowed as richly as I've seen in other works. Rainy day? This is your book.
