I read this book in 6 hours. What?! It was a rainy day and it's a fun read (and I'm a fast reader). This wasn't a "couldn't put it down" kind of book and it's far down the list of the best books I ever read. To be honest, you don't even need to read every single word. But it was an entertaining, if rather predictable, story. Have a cross-country flight? Like an enemies-friends-lovers story line? This is for you!
Emma Wheeler wants nothing more than to be a screenwriter. She studies scripts, she enters (and wins) contests, she has encyclopedic knowledge of scripts by her favorites. But family responsibilities intervene in the form of a father who needs 24/7 care. That is, until an old friend gives her the chance of a lifetime to travel to LA to work with one of her heroes to "fix" his rom-com script that he didn't want to write in the first place. You don't need to be a literary savant to see the story arc here, but it is still enjoyable. Center has a nice breezy style and the dialogue and narrative are at times chuckle-out-loud. A couple of Center's books have been made into Netflix movies (I just watched Happiness For Beginners) so she does know a thing or two about how stories go from novel to screenplay.
