The Correspondent | Virginia Evans

This is one of those books that everyone is reading. I've heard rave reviews about it. It was good. The best book I ever read? No. Let me start though by saying that I really like the epistolary novel format and find it a really interesting way to get insights into characters, kind of without them realizing it. Loved that. I liked the idea of keeping the art of letter writing alive and of different generations using this older tool of communication to find connection.

All in all, though, I found the book to be a bit of a lightweight. It wasn't sticky. I didn't keep thinking about it and kind of forgot what it was about until I started talking about it with a friend. I also thought it was funny that the main character never seemed to think that letter writing had its limitations. Didn't she every just want to talk to her friend?

I enjoyed it and I hope it inspires me and others to write letters, or at least put more extended notes in an email or a greeting card. But it doesn't make my top-10 list.
