Unmarriageable | Soniah Kamal

My friend Susan told me about this book, having heard about it on a podcast recently. And knowing that I read, and re-read Jane Austen with regularity. I think it's interesting how Pride and Prejudice, in particular, has lent itself to so many riffs and spinoffs. It's such a universal story and I find it intriguing to see how most contemporary writers take it on and bring it into more current times. Unmarriageable is particularly interesting since it's set in Pakistani which has even more restrictive views on women and marriage.

There's not a lot to say about the story because you're not going to even think about reading it unless you've already read (and loved) P&P. I'd say Kamal did a great job honoring the spirit of the original while also making it relevant to a completely different culture. Worthy beach read, to be sure.

Do you have favorites in this category? I'm a fan of Confessions of a Jane Austen Addict and Eligible.
