Ever have a book you so wanted to love and then just didn't? I absolutely loved Sandwich and was looking forward to this. And while this book as a lot of what I like about Sandwich, the subject matter was so sad and serious -- well, it just threw me and I can't say I loved it. Newman can be so funny and so "wouldn't she be fun to have lunch with?" in her writing, and there's some of that here, but key plot points just make this much less fun, even as some of the plot points are resolved well.
